IRU want answers

IRU )

The IRU is concerned over the lack of Ministerial support for the European Commission’s proposals to set EU-wide minimum targets for a bigger alternative fuel network, following the adoption of a common EU Transport Council position.

EC proposals would see common EU standards for alternative transport fuels and would develop, in a coordinated way, fuelling infrastructure on the core European road network at regular intervals.

The new position, however, gives individual Member States authority to set their own targets on the location, necessary infrastructure and fuels provided, thereby reducing the possibilities for a harmonised EU wide network that can be used on a cross-border scale.

The IRU has repeatedly questioned the national approach of Member States for the development of alternative fuels, which has prevented the establishment of an adequate EU network. Such fragmentation hinder road transport from meeting its environmental obligations, as laid out in the 2011 EU Transport Policy White Paper.
