In November 2015, the prestigious Plant, Construction & Quarry awards were revived after a couple of years’ hiatus. One man glad to see them return was Creagh Concrete’s Colm Scullion, who picked up the Sand & Gravel Quarry Manager of the Year award on the night.

Last November saw the good work that goes on at Creagh Concrete’s Brackagh Quarry dually acknowledged via the Sand & Gravel Quarry of the Year at the prestigious Plant, Construction & Quarry awards.

On the night, Creagh Concrete claimed wins in two different categories, winning the Sand and Gravel Quarry Manager of the Year award, which was collected by Colm Scullion, while the second award of the Sand and Gravel Quarry of the Year was collected by Conor McGlone.

Colm has been working as the Quarry Manager since it first opened under the Creagh Concrete name in 1992 and was modest in his acceptance of the award, paying tribute to his work colleagues for their contribution towards making the Quarry a highly productive one.

“Obviously I am delighted to have won the award which I see as something everyone working at the Quarry can be proud of,” Colm said after the ceremony at the Ramada Hotel in South Belfast.

“I couldn’t say enough positive comments about the team who work tirelessly week in and week out. This tops off what has been an excellent year for Creagh.”

Undoubtedly, the team work has been a theme which has been carried through at the Brackagh Quarry since 1992 and is the reason it has been successful in its production over the last 23 years.

Colm told us: “Creagh Concrete has been operating this Quarry since October 1992 and it was here 20 years before that.  There are 12 people employed here at the moment.”

The Creagh Concrete name is well known for its excellence along with the quality of its products.

The company was first set-up back in 1976 and has since grown to become one of the largest producers of concrete products for a wide range of market sectors throughout both Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The key sectors for Creagh include construction, civil engineering, house building, gardening and agriculture. The company also offers design, manufacture, supply and installation options for its customers.

Headquartered in Toomebridge, Co Antrim, Creagh also has locations in Ardboe, Co Tyrone; Dunloy, Co Antrim; Draperstown, Co Derry and Magheraglass in Tyrone.

Across the Channel, Creagh has set up bases in Hoveringham in England and in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh.

As aforementioned, Colm operates from the Brackagh Quarry, where a sturdy supply of product runs through smoothly each day to ensure that demands are met.

In the quarry, an array of different sand types are produced and, according to Colm, 70 per cent of the products produced are used in-house.

At present, a project to erect three new wind turbines at the Brackagh Quarry is on-going with the ultimate goal being to make its quarries more efficient, with plans to have these completed by early autumn.

On November 26th, Colm had his own efficiency recognised on a national scale at the Ramada Hotel in South Belfast.

Viewed as the quarry industry event of the year, the Plant, Construction & Quarry awards saw over 500 guests turn out to recognise different companies for their innovation, efficient and quality.

The award for the ‘Sand and Gravel Quarry Manager of the Year’ went to Colm Scullion, which acknowledged the man himself for his efforts throughout the year (not to mention the previous 22) with Creagh, and he was keen to emphasise the great work carried out by his team at the Brackagh Quarry afterwards.

No two ways about it, the award was a testament to the commitment and team work at Creagh Concrete’s Quarry base in Brackagh and it also highlights the commitment displayed by the staff who make Creagh the success that it is.

Colm was overwhelmed, to say the least, on the night when he paid a glowing tribute to the men he works alongside each day.

“I was delighted to receive the recognition,” he put it simply. “It’s nice to get acknowledged after all those years of work, but the guys here definitely deserve credit for the award too. Without their hard work and commitment, I wouldn’t be collecting awards for the company, I can tell you that.”

As for the night itself, Colm was glad to see the awards returning after they’d been gone a couple of years due to the economic downturn which hurt the construction industry worse than most.

“The awards collapsed a few years back but it’s great to have them back now to acknowledge those doing good work in the construction industry.
“Creagh had a great night overall, winning two awards, so you can’t ask for much more than that.”

Speaking after accepting the ‘Sand & Gravel Quarry of the Year’ award on behalf of Creagh, Conor McGlone said it was a testament to the company’s “brilliant staff”.

“2015 has been an exceptional year for Creagh Concrete with many new jobs and contracts added to our UK and Ireland operations,” Conor stated.

“This award highlights the commitment displayed by our brilliant staff who make Creagh the success that it is. To be recognised in such glowing terms by industry professionals is very satisfying.”

Indeed Creagh Concrete seems to have made a habit of satisfying their customers over the last 40 years.
