Blacktop Tarmacadam Co Ltd, which is coming up on 30 years in business, specialises in the design, layout and supply of all Asphalt products for roads, car parks and driveways. Boasting a wide portfolio of clients, it is recognised as one of Ireland’s leading tarmac contractors.

Blacktop Tarmacadam is a family-run business which was established in 1993 and is based in Duleek, Co. Meath. The company is run by Kevin Bissett, Managing Director, and family, with 35 employees in total.

“While some of the personnel may have changed, we’re still very much a family-run operation. We pride ourselves on our quality service and our professional, highly-skilled and courteous staff who range from plant operators to administration. We have completed thousands of roads, car parks, footpaths and driveways over the years, and continue to go from strength to strength.”

As a subcontractor for Lagan Asphalt, which is now part of the Breedon Group, since its inception, Blacktop Tarmacadam has carried out works for many local authorities and large clients throughout Ireland. In addition to road works, the company also specialises in smaller projects such as car parks, housing estates, industrial units and private driveways. No job is too big or too small with a complete service provided from start to finish, including white lining.

“We can do everything from taking up an old road, replacing it with a new one and putting down white lines and cats’ eyes. We’ve always enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Lagan who we continue to work on behalf of for various County Councils,” Kevin explains.

KN Networks, Nolan Construction and Actavo are just some of Blacktop Tarmacadam’s other clients. The Co. Meath-based contractor is currently carrying out repair works to roads where fibre optic cable was laid between Dublin and Amazon’s new data centre in Drogheda. Blacktop is also carrying out repairs at weekends to streets and footpaths in Dublin city centre where fibre optic cables have been laid. Last year, the tarmac specialist completed works on a new car park for Nature’s Best in Drogheda and laid SMA in the new Duleek Bellewstown & District Community Facility, for all the community to enjoy!

Road surfacing, car parks, groundworks, driveways, white lining services and planing works are Blacktop Tarmacadam’s speciality. As experienced road makers, the family business has complete work on national, secondary and urban road resurfacing and pavement contracts. Tarmacadam surfacing for roads, driveways and car parks is being phased out and replaced with Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), which offers superior durability and resistance to deformation.

Car park resurfacing needs to be a fast, smooth operation at all times, but never at the expense of quality or the risk of repetitive reactive maintenance. Blacktop has extensive experience in constructing car parks and undertaking both public and private projects. Furthermore, it provides a wide range of groundwork services, including excavation, drainage, surfacing and kerbing. When it comes to installing driveways, the company doesn’t cut corners or compromise on quality.

Blacktop Tarmacadam also specialises in Bitumen spraying, which is a process that involves the spraying of bituminous emulsion to bind wearing course to base course layer, or to bind new and old material when overlaying. The company’s fleet of Bitumen sprayers are available for work nationally and have carried out works for large road construction companies to County Council and NRA specifications. The M50 and the Castleblayney Bypass are just two of the major road projects it has been associated with.

For effective and efficient planing, Blacktop supplies as a package a planer, truck and sweeper at a competitive rate. Planers, which are also known as cold milling machines, are designed to remove defective materials to the required thickness so that it can be replaced and the carriageway repaired. They are also used to remove strips of asphalt pavement so that supply lines can be installed in trenches, thus ensuring that the time required for road works is kept to a minimum.

The Bissett’s run a top-class fleet of tankers and tippers along with nine pavers of various sizes and 18 rollers. Most of the tankers and tippers are DAF.

Kevin is concerned about rising costs which have been caused by a combination of the pandemic, Brexit and the conflict in Ukraine.

“The massive increase in the price of crude oil has been a double whammy for us. As well as costing more to transport it and run our fleet, the bitumen comes from crude oil. It has slowed things down a bit, but hopefully the situation will improve soon.”

Committed to quality and complete customer satisfaction, Kevin would like to take this opportunity to thank his customers and suppliers for their continued support, as well as his staff for their hard work, dedication and expertise.
